This NG is becoming choked with Chinamem offering fake Nike shoes, Burberry
jackets, Rolex watches...etc. etc...

The point is, that stuff is of no use to me - what I (and I suspect many
others) want are copies of good cameras!

Why can't the little bastards turn out a cloned D3 for a tenth of the Nikon
price, that's what I want to know.

They'd sell like hot cakes.

Because you'd press the shutter release once, and the nameplate would
fall off to reveal "Sigma SD14." And you'd have no recourse.

Seriously, the little buggers forge everything from Adidas running shoes to
Lexus cars - but not cameras! Why is this?

I'd happily take a chance on a copied high-end cam, but they haven't got one
to sell me.

Unless, of course, the market *is* already flooded with fakes Wink Is that
D300 you just bought *really* a D300? Wink

No fears. they will start eventually. Soon. They already started with
USB-Memory-Sticks which eat your data.
The sticks pretends to have a bigger capacity than the flash-chip inside
has. As long as you only use as much of the capacity as there is
phyisically availlybale, the stick works without problems... and you can
write your data without any problem and eror message beyond this limit.
But you'll never be able to read this data again.

Whole cameras will be next. They will buy cheap cheap sensors which have
errors and will render out the errors in the camera software.
Same with lenses.
The "up to 12MP Cameras" with a 2 or 3MB sensor are only the first step!

You'll know as soon as you send it in for repair. I don't think there
are actually fakes on the market. But ther will be eventually.

Actually, lenses might be one area where copies would be acceptable, being
'low-tech' compared to the cameras themselves.

If they, for example, released a copied version of the L 70-200 f/2.8 and
called it 'Prism' (or whatever), it would be quite difficult for Canon to
prove forgery - after all, Canon don't hold a patent on the laws of physics,
and if the Chinese were careful to alter it 'slightly' they might well get
away with it.

Of course, being Chinese, they're unlikely to worry anyway - and would just
send it out replicated to the last detail Wink

Hopefully.

Hello,

Trouble is, the fake Nikon D3 would only be a tenth of the real thing's
quality, as well as its cost.

Don't laugh too loudly at these Eastern copycats. I remember when a
little Japanese fellow turned up at the Isle of Man TT motorcycle
races, where the pride of the European motorcycle industry
competed. He made a living adding small petrol engines to bicycles. He
wanted to make motorcycles, and bought a few examples of the best of
British motorcycles to take back to Japan and study. He thought it
should be possible to make better motorcycles more cheaply.

How everyone laughed!

The little chap's name was Honda.

Hello, Chris:

Good point. Except, I believe that the original poster was referring
to sleazy "knock off" artists...rather than legitimate, respected
manufacturers (such as Honda, itself).

My point was that at the time when Soichiro Honda visited the Isle of
Man TT and bought a few British motorcycles he was widely regarded by
the British motorcycle press and industry as a sleazy Japanese
knock-off artist who hadn't the slightest clue about the really
serious craftmanship and expertise required to make anything as good
as a Big British Motorcycle.

Hello, Chris:

That says far more about the racial prejudices of the British press,
than it does of Soichiro Honda's integrity, in my opinion.

Exactly my point. I was likening the ignorant prejudices of the
technically knowledgeable British motorycling press them then to the
similarly ignorant prejudices of some posters here today.

You are right... to a certain point. Honda did not copy the beritish
bike nor did he try to sell them as such. They looked at existing
technologies, corrected some issues and sold an even better product.
Tell me a product where chinese manufacturers did this in the last few
years.
So if the chinese engineers are buying some cameras and build own ones
under their own name and these cameras are good and cheap, i'll be the
first one to buy such a thing.
but what the chinese manufacturers are doing in the last few years is
producing just cheap copies. And that's not what I want. And when
someone wants a chinese D3 it would be a copy, and not a genuinely
designed new camera. It would be a D3 with the quality of a lomo at
halve the price of a D3.
