I cannot transfer files from my wife's Coolpix 4800 to my Compaq
Presario M2000 laptop. If I click on the device in My Computer it
tells me no disk is inserted. The Nikon software is installed, but
Picture Project doesn't recognize the camera either. I have no problem
transferring files to my laptop from my D70 using a SanDisk ImageMate
CF Reader, and I have no problems dragging and dropping files from her
Coolpix 4800 to my hard drive using Windows Explorer on my Pavillion
desktop.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Mike

Try the USB reader route.

Some CoolPix cameras have alternate USB settings. I don't know if
the CP4800 is one, but usually the options are Mass Storage and PTP.
According to the CP8800 manual, Mass Storage mode must be used with
Win98, WinME and Win2kPro. WinXP can use either Mass Storage or PTP
mode. Which version of Windows is installed on your Compaq laptop,
and is this the first time you've tried transferring files to it or
have you done that before? Also, if the version of Windows
installed on the laptop is supported by the CP4800, the problem may
be caused by the laptop's USB driver. Sometimes these problems go
away if the driver is deleted and reinstalled. And last, has only
one USB cable been used when connecting the CP4800 to the laptop and
the desktop, or is a different USB cable used with each computer?
If the latter, try swapping the cables.

It was PTP vs. Mass Storage.

Both the desktop and the laptop are XP, but the laptop is a 2005
vintage, as opposed to 2001 on the desktop. I now remember that when I
first set up my D70 on the desktop, it didn't like PTP, even though it
was XP. But that was so long ago I'd totally forgotten about those
options.

Turns out it was the opposite on the laptop. The 4800 was set to Mass
Storage, but by changing it to PTP it works just fine. Dontcha just
love Microsoft? Smile

We're going to Yosemite in May, and I didn't want my wife to have to
wait until we got home to see her pictures, so the help is very much
appreciated.

Now now, don't be too critical of Microsoft. That's my job. Smile
