Some CoolPix cameras have alternate USB settings. I don't know if
the CP4800 is one, but usually the options are Mass Storage and PTP.
According to the CP8800 manual, Mass Storage mode must be used with
Win98, WinME and Win2kPro. WinXP can use either Mass Storage or PTP
mode. Which version of Windows is installed on your Compaq laptop,
and is this the first time you've tried transferring files to it or
have you done that before? Also, if the version of Windows
installed on the laptop is supported by the CP4800, the problem may
be caused by the laptop's USB driver. Sometimes these problems go
away if the driver is deleted and reinstalled. And last, has only
one USB cable been used when connecting the CP4800 to the laptop and
the desktop, or is a different USB cable used with each computer?
If the latter, try swapping the cables.
