I am thinking of making a box for a camera and need a small piece glass
or plastic material for the
front to shoot through. Can anybody recommend where could I find
something like this. It doesn't have to be large but I would not want
to cut it if possible. Any ideas?

How about a large (49mm or more) UV filter, minus the mount? Our local photo
shop has a box full of second-hand filters for $10 each...

I personally wouldn't want to use plastic. But,
good grief, look around and you can find all sorts
of things. Examples of plastic are CD cases,
bottoms of plastic glasses, plastic boxes with
lids, etc. Glass could include lenses for safety
glasses, welding eye piece replacements (clear),
no correction eye glasses (used just for effect),
and a whole range of small picture frames that
have glasses (just about any size you want).
Lots of other sources.

Any hardware store should carry glass or plastic and cut it for you. Should
not cost you anymore than a couple bucks for a small piece.

To avoid damaging the image, you need a window that is optically flat as
a minimum.

Any camera filter should be optically flat. A UV filter will have
minimum effect on colour, but a "Skylight" filter is almost as good. So,
at the minimum, buy the cheapest UV or skylight filter you can find
(used is OK if it's not scratched) and remove it from the mount by
unscrewing the retaining ring.

If you can afford it, buy a good-quality multicoated UV or skylight
filter instead, to get the anti-reflection coating. This will increase
contrast of the image, particularly in difficult lighting.

Filters are available in a wide range of diameters; you should be able
to get one of nearly the size you want.
