A Kleinschmidt? My first printer was a "Black Box" brand and it
was pretty much an ultralight Teletype style printer. No lower case
characters, and unlike Teletypes, it used (I think) RS232 serial
instead of current loop. Very slow, but back then, printing needs
were very modest, and by my standards, even really expensive
printers were slow. For more wonderful printers also consider the
Diablos and NEC Spinwriters. They could print *very* high
resolution pictures, using only the "period" character and using
micropositioning, but printing this way was exceedingly slow. If I
recall correctly, there were a few CP/M applications that used these
printers to produce graphs and pie charts. Slowly. Very slowly. >> Stay informed about: Cheap Text Only Printer For House Use ? |

In the 80's I had a STAR dot-matrix printer.
It used typewriter ribbon !
I don't know how many boxes of paper
that printer ground out.
Set the box of perforated paper below the printer,
load the tractor, start a print job,
come back a few hours later to de-collate.
Come to think of it, it had an attachment
to hang a roll of teletype paper too....

I'd recommend moving to laser and ditching ink jet altogether, first
you'll have an instantly dry copy and laser toner typically will print
2500 sheets on one refill.
I bought a Brother HL-2040 from Costco late last year. $90 at Amazon. >> Stay informed about: Cheap Text Only Printer For House Use ? |

Right. And the OP should get himself a USB hub to go with it. They
cost < $10.

I have two ex-government HP mono laser printers, bought for $40 each from a
regular auction. The 6MP is a great little machine with a small desktop
footprint. Most of those 1990's HPs have serial connectors and an Ethernet
card, and the toner cartridges are easily found. Drivers are available from
the HP website.

I second or third the motion for a cheap laser. My HP4L must be
least 10 years old and is still running fine. It gets a lot of use,
mostly by my wife, but a cartridge still lasts about two years. When my
current one runs out, and I've used the one spare I have on hand, I'll
probably buy a new HP. They're advertised here for under $100 Canadian,
and that's less than the price of a replacement cartridge for the 4L.

I've had great lucking refilling the toner cartridges on my cheap samsung
1750 laser printer. I had the original cartridge and the one I bought at
the same time I bought the printer and I've been refilling them for 3 years.
Cost is about $15 for 2500 pages. I leave color picture/photo printing to
an hp 8250 inkjet that I bought off of ebay as a store demo unit with a full
ink supply for $50. A full set of cartridges is about $60 for that beast,
but they can be replaced one color ar a time and the printer doesn't run the
ink to a sponge like epsons when it does a self-clean. >> Stay informed about: Cheap Text Only Printer For House Use ? |

Yup. But was the wonder time when things that previously
could only be done in major computer centers could now be
done (slowly) on your (and my) desk.
