Hello,
Figured you folks would know.
I have a several year old Canon printer.
Really basic. Just a single black cartridge in it; no photo, etc.
It's time to replace it, as it has developed several problems.
This old printer is exactly what I need for the house.
I don't do any photo printing; just a few pages, perhaps, of text in a week.
Speed not an issue. Reliability and cartridge cost are, of course. Also
print quality.
So, I'm after a simple, black only, reliable text printer that is cheap to
purchase (and to use).
And, also hopefully, one with cheaper cartridges than the BC-20 ones that
this one takes.
If possible with a 232 interface (I think that's what it is) rather than a
USB.
The Canon I have now uses the PC's "Printer Port" which is great as I'm out
of USB ports on also this older model PC.
Do they still make such an animal ?
Any brand and model number suggestions would be very appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob >> Stay informed about: Cheap Text Only Printer For House Use ? |

Scrounge an old laser printer, not an inkjet. Anyway,
comp.periphs.printers is the printer group. >> Stay informed about: Cheap Text Only Printer For House Use ? |

1) check some 'used computer' houses for an old dot matrix printer.
2) I bought a Brother HL1440 laser printer for under $100 a couple of
years ago. Still running on the initial toner cartridge. IMHO - it's hard
to beat a cheap laser for cost of consumables - although it is USB. >> Stay informed about: Cheap Text Only Printer For House Use ? |

You have more than 127 USB devices attached to EACH of your USB ports?
That must be amazing to see!

I agree, cost per print lower, no clogging. Even a new one can be had
quite cheap. Keep an eye on Staples specials, I got a Brother 2040 for
$70 after rebates. This one has both parallel and usb, you may have a
problem finding parallel port on new models from other mfgr's.

I agree with the rest. Go for a cheap laser printer. I would get a new
one (look for sales) someday your current printer is going to die and you
will get a newer one and an older printer may have problems with the new
computer.

USB hubs are cheap. Ink jet printers are cheap. They're practically
disposable at this point.
Go to an Office Depot or whatever and look at cartridges. Find the
cheapest ones. Get the printer that goes with the cartridges.
Also, find a printer that will work without all the cartridges in it.
For instance, I just pulled the yellow cartridge out of a Canon i550 and
it was happy to try and print in color anyway. Don't buy the color
cartridges if you don't need them. >> Stay informed about: Cheap Text Only Printer For House Use ? |

I am also very happy with the HL-1440, and it does have a parallel port
in addition to the USB. At least mine does.
If you have a female DB-25 (25 pin) connector on the PC, it is probably
a parallel port connection. RS-232 serial ports are generally male
DB-25 or DB-9 connectors on the PC side. >> Stay informed about: Cheap Text Only Printer For House Use ? |

Insane. Why stop with 70's technology if you're going to recomend
a dinosour. Get a teletype instead! What could be more wonderful
than an ASR-33? Perhaps a 60's era IBM mainframe line printer if you've
got a spare bedroom to dedicate and a good arangement with the power company. >> Stay informed about: Cheap Text Only Printer For House Use ? |

Case sensitivity??

Don't you go knocking the teletype. We shipped hundreds of mini
computers with just a teletype and customers were very happy. I learned
my machine assembler on one of those, not to mention how to expertly
splice tape.

Oh, absolutely. What good is a printer that takes less than an hour a page
or which can't be heard two blocks away. AND OF COURSE, LOWER CASE IS FOR
WIMPS. WHO NEEDS A CHARACTER SET THAT CANT BE REPRESENTED IN 5 BITS? >> Stay informed about: Cheap Text Only Printer For House Use ? |

I've never found injets all that cheap unless you never print more than about
50 pages per month. Get a "personal" laser printer or a used "office"
laser printer and it'll pay for itself in about 6-9 months. >> Stay informed about: Cheap Text Only Printer For House Use ? |

Since it is quite simple to get a cheap color inkjet printer for under
$50 (refurbed), it makes no sense to pursue a black and white only
printer with hard to get ribbons, and end up with problems like having
to buy a card with a parallel or serial interface in order to connect it. >> Stay informed about: Cheap Text Only Printer For House Use ? |
