Three years ago, I bought the first Canon Ixus I 4mpx camara. Used to
think that Canon should be good until now. The LCD monitor failed to
show life images, though it can play captured images. Sent for Canon
Service Center and informed that it is an optics/lens unit problem.
Repair costs RM331.00

I did not use the camera frequently, less than 1x per week. The
camera
broke down so fast considering the actual usage. So disappointed.
Wondering if u face similar quality issue with Canon camera.....

I undertand three years ia a long time, long enough to buy a new
camera. Just not sure I should stick with Canon.....

I believe most will agree that it is about average or maybe a little
above.

I am sorry to report that the repair situation is universal. They tend
to replace sub assemblies rather than repair anything. That gets expensive.
Cameras in general, and the consumer end in particular are designed as
disposable and not really intended for repair. Even the professional lines
show this tendency. I guess it goes along with the rate of change in
technology where it is outdated before you get it home.

Not only that, but the materials used can degrade even without any use.
Little plastic gears and levers can and do snap uppon use because the
plastic has changed or the environment it has been sitting in has attacked
the plastic. Oil and grease will change and become more like a glue rather
than help parts slide smoothly. Repairs on such delicate assemblies are
sometimes more expensive than buying new.

Facts of modern life

Well, my 300D (Digital Rebel) is now about 3.5 years old and approaching
32,000 shots taken. Still on the original two batteries as well.

Seems pretty solid to me.

Storage conditions also affect the camera.. and batteries.
My 73 Toyota Carolla burned up a set of points every 4000 miles and
new exhaust valves and seat resurfacing every 14,000 (yes, that is 14
thousand) miles. Does the mean Toyota doesn't make a good car?
Nonsense, but that one was sure bad.

Sometimes one is bad, sometimes the batch. Canon's quality is just
fine and that coming from a Nikon fan!

YES I DO...! Two years ago we bought a Power Shot SD 300 ( Elf),
Seemed like a good compact camera. Within 4 months the lens wouldn't
retract (error E18). Cannon repaired it under warranty. Six months
later it broke again...same problem. Canon wanted $150.00 to fix it. I
will never buy another Canon camera again...

Yeah, I would expect another breakdown soon after this repair. Also,
the repair (~U$100) costs too high. Not worth spending on a 4Mpx
camera. Anyway, I bought a new one, of course not Canon product : Sony
DSC-T200
