According to today's NY Times, the Canon Powershot SD880 IS is the best you
can get for under $300...
I found it interesting that the author wasn't impressed by the hi def
feature of the digicams in this price range. Apparently, the term "hi def"
in this price range just refers to the dimensions; picture quality in this
mode wasn't great...

Anybody know of a pocket sized camera that is affordable but has a good hi
def mode?

Take Care,
Dudley

You mean HD video?
HD 720 & HD 1080 refer to the pixel height, not width.

Yeah, Paul, I was looking around for a low-buck camera that would do good HD
video. But, the NY Times article said that the HD video feature "hi def"
had the right dimensions, but the image quality wasn't good for the cams in
this range.

I'll be in San Rafael training with my new guide from January 11 to February
1, and I was hoping to get some video shots of my brute to post, as well as
stills of course...

Take Care,
Dudley

Probably no such thing. I'm looking at a Panasonic LX3 which does HD 720
video but supposedly not that great either.

Yeah, you're probably right, Paul. I'll most likely end up shooting
everything with my A720.

The video image is good, but I haven't been crazy about the sound recording.
I don't know if the sound gets compressed too much, or what, but certain
sounds tend to be a bit mushy.

Take Care,
Dudley

Best all-around quality, all things considered (especially IQ).

See the article:
Best Bets in Cameras, Under $300
By: Stuart Goldenberg

http://www.nytimes.com

In particular, Mr. Goldenberg says:

CANON POWERSHOT SD880 IS ($252).
This camera
has a 4X zoom, wide-angle lens. Customizable top button; it can be a Movie
button
so you don't have to change modes for video. Huge, bright three-inch screen,
but
too bad there's no optical viewfinder.
Gorgeous and solid. Controls are beautifully thought-out. New processor chip
makes
this camera very fast. Not many gimcracks, but wow, those photos - in any
kind of
light, they have a presence, detail and vibrancy that puts the other cameras
to shame.
Doggone that Canon. It wins this contest every single year. C'mon, people -
where's
the suspense?
