Post subject: Canon A710is battery hog

Is it just mine or is anyone else having problems with the A710 going
through batteries very quickly? When I first got it they seemed to
last much longer. Is it possible I set something wrong to create this
problem?

I just got through a 2 week vacation using the camera all of the time--and
even going back and reviewing photos and the batteries lasted until after I
got home. I purposefully used regular alkaline batteries because I didn't
want to fool with possibly recharging my others. And, I was using the
largest files for the pics. I am only using a 2 sec review time, though, and
many times I turned off the flash, such as when I was in an outdoor market
taking shots at waist level trying to be inconspicuous.

No problem here. I use Energizer Lithiums and get over a 1000 shots to a
set of batteries. I used only 1 set on a 2 week vacation.

If we knew what was very quickly, how long is shorter than longer, the
shooting conditions and what batteries you are using we might begin to
assess whether or not you actually have a problem.

I'd been using some 2100 mah rechargables, and they seemed to die
after about a month with very little use. I thought maybe the batts
were the problem so I put in some alkalines, and after about 1 month
and maybe 20 shots the battery low warning comes on. Of course its
possible that the alkalines were old also. I just had the feeling
that somehow the camera or some funtion stayed on while the camera was
shut off. At least now I know its not a common problem.

OK, even normal NiMH should not self discharge after a month but if you
are leaving in camera that long then get yourself a set of eneloops by
Sanyo. These are NiMH with a very low self discharge. Now there are
others (Hybrid, Kodak) that are also low self discharge, but I've no
experience with them. I have used a set of Eneloops since last September
(2006). Charged them once in November, got 650 shots and haven't charged
them since, still working at 305 shots. That's 4 cells in an A95.
