Are there any rumors in the mill about a replacement for the 5D? I feel that
I have been snake bit when I buy Canon stuff.I bought the following:-
20D replaced by the 30D
75-300mm IS lens replaced by 70-300 IS
16-35 f2.8 L lens replaced by 16-35 f/2.8 L II
580EX Speedlite to be replaced soon.
So this is why I am asking this question about a 5D replacement. If anyone
has any knowledge about this, I sure would like to know.
I would also like to know if the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM would soon
be replaced.
Thank for any info.

Yes, there are usually rumors about new releases, replacements,
upgrades, etc on just about anything electronic. I wouldn't call these
replacements in some senses of the term.
But relax; your 20D is a perfectly fine camera, as is the speedlite, and
the 16-35 L fine enough. They work well. I don't know the 75-300.
There'll always be another body, lens, etc. around the corner for a few
more years, but they don't make what you have obsolete.

Tell me about it. Stuff is becoming obsolete faster than ever before.
I have obsolete phones, obsolete audio gear, obsolete computers and
lots of obsolete gear like monitors, printers and zip drives, obsolete
large screen TV, obsolete VCR, obsolete film gear in the $1000s, and
obsolete enlargers. Buying electronic stuff today is like buyng a
beer. You don't really own it, you just borrow it.

Canon is very secretive. Nobody knows when the next models will come
out. But generally new models for each family of Canon appear every
year or two... rarely longer than 2 years (but the 400D took about 2.5
years after the 350D). The 5D was announced in Aug 2005, so it is
getting kind of stale.
So of course there will be a 5D replacement, and probably this year.
And maybe a year and a half after that, there will be a replacement
for the replacement.
If you want to play the game, you have to buy, and then buy again
after maybe two or three generations, according to your needs and
desires. It's expensive.

I do. After waiting a long time for a 30D replacement, and
not seeing one, I bought a 30D last week to replace my 10D. So now
I'm sure Canon will soon announce a 30D replacement.

No it isn't.
It's only obsolete to those who don't create images of value with their
gear.
What are you images worth to you? If they are ONLY vehicles for you to
"experience" a body, then perhaps obsolete. But if you cherish the images
you create with them...then their values isn't so trivial.
As for re-sale value... -Anyone who buys digital for its resale value is
pretty foolish.
If you buy your gear to actually use...there's nothing obsolete about it.
My 5D, 16-35, 580EX all work jes' fine...and they won't blow up when Canon
releases their inevitable update.
My "obsolete" 10D will soon find new life as a dedicated IR camera...after
having provided me countless images I'll enjoy for the rest of my life.
Obsolete? No way.

Most expect a 5D replacement by fall. It would considered "over-due" at
that point, by typical model life-spans.
I've got a year's worth of images from mine so far, and will collect many
more while other folks wait...and wait...and wait. If I can find one before
I leave for Africa, I'm going to pick up a 1D3...but not to replace the
5D...rather to complement it. This would leave a perfect trio: Full-Frame
for landscape...Frame-rate for sports/action/wildlife...and an IR
specialized camera for tinkering. The only "obsolete" digital camera
purchase for me became this one:
http://www.pbase.com/markuson/image/47959941/original
....but that's another story, and no fault of Canon.
I've NEVER experienced buyer's remorse with any of the three DSLRs I've
owned...likely to become four soon.
Of those four...three will see continual use, and the fourth one's sensor
still lives on after being transplanted into another body.

I'm curious...
When do you reach for the 30D when you've got the 1D2?
Weight? Built-in flash? What?

OK, let me guess...
You just sold your 1D2, and the 30D is holding you over at 5fps until your
1D3 arrives.
Ya?

The 10D and now 30D is my backup camera for the 1D2,
so I wanted a better backup for when I carry both.
Then sometimes I want to travel lighter. For example,
most of my European trips I have been carrying the 10D
and one or two lenses. I wanted something better,
but I've been trying to hold out waiting for a generation
after the 30D (hoping for 14 bits and lower read noise
for astronomy). But upcoming trips meant I needed to
jump now. (Upcoming trips also why I started the carbon fiber
travel tripod thread). Some plane trips have very
restrictive carry on weight limits, so the smaller weight
and bulk of the 30D over the 1D2 is a necessity sometimes,
and if I'm not doing wildlife, the 30D is great (and even with
wildlife the 30d is still very good).

Now, let me ask you a question: Does the 30D meet your requirements?
Then why wouldn't it still meet your requirements after a newer product
comes out?
To put it the other way: Unless your requirement is "I want to own the
latest equipment" there is no need to be upset or disappointed when a new
model comes out.
The only exception would be if your current purchase does not meet your
requirements but you had to compromise and the new model would have met your
requirements. That's bad luck, indeed.

I'll be in South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique. Unfortunately, I'll be
working in non-photographic ways most of that time...so my wildlife
"exposure" will be limited. I'm looking into extending my trip for more
photographic opportunities, but that's not certain yet...I'll have to change
confirmed tickets, so we'll see... If you happen to have a way of
forwarding info re: photo trips in these areas, I'd appreciate anything
along those lines. I would have killed to be on your recent photo drives
(lions, etc.). This will be AFTER (on the way home from) spending nearly a
month in Ukraine...so it'll be a busy summer for me.

No matter what you buy or when you buy it, chances are real good it will be
replaced eventually. Buy based on your needs today, not what might be
coming out later.

Most consumer devices get replaced. It's the nature of the
marketplace.
Rumors? You want rumors? We got rumors!
Are any of then reliable? Of course! Just ask the rumormongers! They
will tell you exactly how they know the rumors are true.

That's not what I heard.
The 5D has a circuit inside that will be activated 4 months after its
replacement is shipped. The circuit will count 500 shutter
activations, then trip, rendering the PCB useless.
You'e been warned!
