Post subject: Kodak Camera showing as removable drive but asks to insert disk

Hi,
Just wondered if anyone had come across this problem. Camera is a Kodak
DX4900, which used to show up as such in Windows Explorer (XP SP2) and
images could be accessed directly. Now the camera shows up as a Removable
Drive, but when clicking on it in Explorer, I get asked to "please insert a
disk into Drive G:/".
I have upgraded Easyshare as new versions have appeared, unfortunately I do
not know if the problem introduced itself after such an upgrade, or whether
the Easyshare software should even have such an effect on Explorer access.
Any help gratefully appreciated!

Windows is allocating drive G to the camera which means that it must be
recognising drives A to F as legitimate devices. If you only have 3 drives
in use there is something wrong with your drive allocation. You could try
inserting the card into a USB card reader, as these are recognised and
allocated drive letters according to how many different types of card they
can read. |

Are you *sure* about that?
In XP, I think you can assign any unused letter (except A, B, or C) to
a drive. All previous letters don't need to be assigned.

Found the solution on a photographic website. The Camera Connection Software
in the later Kodak easyshare software suite conflicts with and prevents the
inbuilt WinXP camera connection software from working, so instead of the
camera showing up in Explorer, it is a generic Removable Device with a drive
letter. This is detected as being without a disk inserted! After
uninstalling the Easyshare CCS component the camera is then detected again.

Perhaps I worded it badly. My card reader has 4 slots for different cards,
when I connect it to my usb port, Win XP assigns the letters E,F,G,H to it,
although there may be only one of the slots with a card in it. Win XP does
not show which slot is filled. In Explorer, you have to select each drive to
find the right one. Haven't tried My Computer to see whether it will show

There is a way to show which slot has a card in it: name the card.
This name will show up instead of a drive letter.

I usually assign a volume label to my flash cards, which is done
the same way you'd assign them to disk drives. Then when using
Explorer I'd see something like this:
> [drive icon] Removable Disk (H
> [drive icon] CF_256MB (I
> [drive icon] XD_1GB (J
which shows that two flash cards are currently plugged into the
reader. My version of XP is MCE 2005. If your Explorer doesn't
