The latter can be fairly inexpensive. Panasonic for one has been putting
stabilizers in even their entry-level models for a couple of years now.
So, it's possible to get a stabilized camera for $150 list, and probably
cheaper for an actual street price.

Hello Henry.
I don't want to get into the whole SLR 'V' P&S war, because it's just a
ridiculous argument.
You are mainly shooting people in low light. Even if the camera was on a
tripod, you would still probably get motion blur from the people as they are
constantly moving. Therefore you need all the available light you can get
so you can use a higher shutter speed, which will freeze their motion. One
way to overcome this is to have a bigger aperture on the lens, which will
let in more light, the other is to increase the ISO, which amplifies the
signal taken from the sensor. Or of course you can create your own light
(for example using the built in flash).
With P&S cameras, the aperture letting in light is minimal and the noise
levels at higher ISO settings are poor compared to an SLR (mainly due
smaller, cheaper sensors with small pixel pitch and bit depth). The
in-camera flash is also very small, too close to the lens and not very
powerful and there's not much you can do to change that.
P&S manufacturers try to compete with the SLR market by clever marketing
departments manipulated figures, but in real life you can't compare the two.
So, your choice at the end of the day. I would try to work out how many low
light night shots you actually take and how important they are to you
personally.

Compute the pixel spacing:
DSC-T100 has a 1/2.5" sensor, which means the actual sensor
size is 5.76 x 4.29 mm. The largest image size is
3264 x 2448 pixels. Compute the pixel spacing:
5.76 mm * 1000 mm/micron / 3264 pixels = 1.76 microns/pixel
That's at the lowest end of current cameras. Now plot this value
in the gray band on Figure 6 at:
http://www.clarkvision.com/imagedetail/digital.sensor.performance.summary
The gray band at 1.76 microns is at the bottom of the plot
which means very poor high ISO performance.
Try and find a camera with the largest pixels.

Ignoring the what camera to buy issue, another issue is your technique and
methods of getting the shot.
You have said that you don't want to carry a tripod but it might be worth
buying a gorillapod or an ultrapod (my own choice), which allows you to
attach the camera to items such as lamp-posts and benches to give a solid
foundation.
One you have attched the camera to something you can use the time-delay
function (usually used to take a picture of yourself when there is noone
else around) to eliminate the shake caused when you press the shutter
release button.
No good if you want to capture a particular instant but very effective if
the timing isn't too crucial. >> Stay informed about: Best Camera for NIght Shots? |

AFAIK the quality at that level is poor, using massive noise reduction to
give an image with little detail.
The best low light P&Ss are the Fujis. The F30 and F31fd are best, followed
by the new F50fd, which is twice the megapix (12) but not as good at high
ISOs.

a Panasonic for night shots ? lol
Get a Fuji with a Super CCD , the Canon G9 or the Nikon G5100.

You obviously didn't bother to look at the image, which is as good or
better than anything the others would have produced, especially since
the superb stabilized Leica super-zoom lens was near the far end of its
12x zoom range. Glass matters.

John,
I looked at the photo, and while I concede that it looks pretty good,
it was shot at ISO 100. In this case, there was plenty of light on
the fountain for images at low ISO's. However, what kind of quality
do you get in really low light situations that require ISO's around
800 or 1600? I doubt that you will get an image without a LOT of
noise.

Not really -- the exposure was a full 2 secs.

When I can use time exposure, I get excellent results.

I rarely have a need for more than ISO400, which is quite good when
post-processed with Neat Image.
Even ISO800 is reasonably good when post-processed with Neat Image.
The max for the camera is ISO1250, but that gives too little advantage
over ISO800 for me to bother with it.
