My favorite preacher used to say (with a grin), "God can do a lot with
sin...but what can he do with stupidity???"

The option to take photographs without a CF card permits you to use it
tethered to a PC running the supplied software and storing the
photographs on the hard drive, many professionals do this, although
perhaps not with that model. Of course the remote control software could
override an absent CF card interlock, as could the sensor cleaning mode,
which does not take a photograph, all of which beggars the question of
why allow taking photographs without a CF card? Perhaps it is for
demonstration and user confidence checks.

no i am not a troll. why would you think i am? i know what the purpose
of a CF card is. my first digital camera required one.
i asked about the CF card because in the manual it says you can
operate it without a CF card if you wish, however it does not explain
what other device you could use to store the images.
---
My Canona 10D has a menu option that allows you to take photos without a CF
card. It has a 9 photo internal buffer and stores the photos in the buffer
(just like it does when a CF card is installed). The only way you can get
the photos out of the buffer, I believe, is to insert a CF card. Once that
happens the photos are written from the buffer to the CF card. The buffer
is present so you can take photos faster than they can be written to the CF
card, in the case of my 10D up to 3 frames per second.

If you connect to a computer, and use the canon utilities program you can
use your computer to store without a cf card.

Oh, sorry. I thought that "pompous, pretentious, and arrogant"
fell on the "Frank ess" (never one to be explicit when a sneaky

Some cameras I've heard of don't recognize the internal memory for
most purposes if a memory card is installed. A good use would be to
store in internal memory a picture or two identifying the true owner
of the camera, and possibly a method of returning it if the camera
is either lost or stolen and eventually recovered by someone. None
of my cameras has ever had any internal memory though . . . >> Stay informed about: is a CF card necessary for a Canon Digital Rebel? |

Did you by any chance actually *read* the XTi manual before framing that rant?
If you did, you should realize that its two references (on pages 29 and 94 of
the English version) to shooting without a CF card are too brief and
unspecific to answer the OP's question. While they raise the issue of shooting
without a card, they tell you neither why you'd ever want to nor what will
happen if you do. It's not hard to understand why the OP was confused.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I have. Before I bought the camera. When I
bought the camera. And again just now. It's sitting right here in
front of me. Did you happen to read the part of it (Step 4 on page 14,
in the very beginning of the basics) that tells you to insert a CF
card? You know, in that section where it also tells you to insert a
battery, to attach a lens, and to turn the power switch to ON??? Which
part of that appears to be non-required to take images?
> If you did, you should realize that its two references (on pages 29 and 94 of
OK, you want to try a little documentation comparison? Here we go...
Page 29 has to do with removing a card. If there was no card, why
would you have to be shown how to remove one? It tells you how to
mount and detach a lens in the manual, too - but would YOU make the
[il]logical leap that no lens is required because of that?
However, ass/u/ming that you actually meant page *28*, it says " *The*
*captured* *image* *is* *recorded* *onto* *the* *CF* *card*
(Optional)". [emphasis mine]
So, if the image is recorded onto the CF card, and you don't have a
card, how is the image going to be recorded? Yeah, the card is
optional. But without it, you cannot record images. It says so right
there, because it says that the "images are recorded onto it". How is
that confusing? A 500mm lens is optional, too, but without it you
cannot take images that require it.
Page 94 tells you that you can turn the reminder that there is no card
in the camera on or off, and how to do that. It DOES NOT say that you
can record images when you do so, nor even imply it, especially in the
face of the other specific declarations throughout the manual.
How does the fact that you can turn a warning off indicate (or even
imply) that you can take a picture and have it recorded without a card
in the camera? It's a feature to remind you that you have to have the
card in the camera to record images (UNLESS you already know about
tethering, because you've read the software documenntationo that tells
you how to do that). You notice it doesn't say a word about tethering
or conecting to a computer, as that's a truly optional thing to do,
covered in the software documentation, and might possibly be confusing
to someone who didn't understand it.
> the English version) to shooting without a CF card are too brief and

NOWHERE in the manual does it even *imply* that you can take images
without a card.
It ALSO, in several places, indicates [specifically] that the number of
pictures remaining that can be taken is directly linked *to* *the*
*size* *of* *the* *card* [#3 on page 28, where it tells you that the
number will be displayed after youu insert the card and close the cover
and turn the camera on; at bottom of page 28 in the little note, most
of page 60 & 61, INCLUDING the paragraph on page 61 where it says,
quote: "Note that this number will also be displayed even if there is
no CF card in the camera. *Be* *careful* *not* *to* *shoot* *without*
*a* *CF* *card* *in* *the* *camera* " (again, emphasis mine)]
If there's no card, how, do you suppose, those numbers would be
determined?
On page 62 it says (in reference to shooting Raw+Large JPEG): "the two
images are saved to the CF card". No cardie, no savie.
IN ADDITION to those *major* clues, page 162 [in the Troubleshooting
Guide], two of the solutions, under "No images can be shot or
recorded", are that "The CF card is not properly inserted", and "the CF
card is full, replace it with a new CF card or erase unnecessary
images". How is that ambiguous in any way?
In the specs, it says "Recording Media: Type I or II CF card". Doesn't
say "built in memory anywhere, does it?
So yes, I've read the manual.

In most situations you will need a CF card as a storage device, this
includes most outdoor shooting situations where you want to carry just the
camera, lenses filters etc.
In some studio situations - with the camera on a tripod it may make sense to
leave it connected to a PC running camera remote control software. For
example you may want to take a picture of a developing scene every 5 or 10
minutes. In this case the camera does not need internal storage media
because the remote control program can also write the image data file can
directly PC's hard disk.
You might want to look at the documentation for the "Camera Window" utility
that came on the CD of your camera. There is also third party software
available that allows more control of how the image data is processed.
The term to look for is "tethered operation". >> Stay informed about: is a CF card necessary for a Canon Digital Rebel? |

Sure, they *could* be, not *would* be. If found by an honest
person they wouldn't be. And if stolen by a thief, there's a good
chance that they wouldn't be knowledgeable enough to discover the
pictures. It's reasonable to assume that a stolen camera would
usually contain a memory card, and as I said, with one installed,
many cameras wouldn't show images from the internal memory. They
usually have an obscure menu option to allow copying internal memory
images to a memory card. If a thief kept the camera for their own
personal use these images might go unnoticed for months or years.
Or not, especially if any thieves are in our rpd midst. >> Stay informed about: is a CF card necessary for a Canon Digital Rebel? |

: > If you did, you should realize that its two references (on pages 29 and 94 of
:
: OK, you want to try a little documentation comparison? Here we go...
:
: Page 29 has to do with removing a card. If there was no card, why
: would you have to be shown how to remove one? It tells you how to
: mount and detach a lens in the manual, too - but would YOU make the
: [il]logical leap that no lens is required because of that?
:
: However, ass/u/ming that you actually meant page *28*, it says " *The*
: *captured* *image* *is* *recorded* *onto* *the* *CF* *card*
: (Optional)". [emphasis mine]
:
: So, if the image is recorded onto the CF card, and you don't have a
: card, how is the image going to be recorded? Yeah, the card is
: optional. But without it, you cannot record images. It says so right
: there, because it says that the "images are recorded onto it". How is
: that confusing? A 500mm lens is optional, too, but without it you
: cannot take images that require it.
:
: Page 94 tells you that you can turn the reminder that there is no card
: in the camera on or off, and how to do that. It DOES NOT say that you
: can record images when you do so, nor even imply it, especially in the
: face of the other specific declarations throughout the manual.
:
: How does the fact that you can turn a warning off indicate (or even
: imply) that you can take a picture and have it recorded without a card
: in the camera? It's a feature to remind you that you have to have the
: card in the camera to record images (UNLESS you already know about
: tethering, because you've read the software documenntationo that tells
: you how to do that). You notice it doesn't say a word about tethering

:
: NOWHERE in the manual does it even *imply* that you can take images
: without a card.
:
: It ALSO, in several places, indicates [specifically] that the number of
: pictures remaining that can be taken is directly linked *to* *the*
: *size* *of* *the* *card* [#3 on page 28, where it tells you that the
: number will be displayed after youu insert the card and close the cover
: and turn the camera on; at bottom of page 28 in the little note, most
: of page 60 & 61, INCLUDING the paragraph on page 61 where it says,
: quote: "Note that this number will also be displayed even if there is
: no CF card in the camera. *Be* *careful* *not* *to* *shoot* *without*
: *a* *CF* *card* *in* *the* *camera* " (again, emphasis mine)]
:
: If there's no card, how, do you suppose, those numbers would be
: determined?
:
:
: On page 62 it says (in reference to shooting Raw+Large JPEG): "the two
: images are saved to the CF card". No cardie, no savie.
:
: IN ADDITION to those *major* clues, page 162 [in the Troubleshooting
: Guide], two of the solutions, under "No images can be shot or
: recorded", are that "The CF card is not properly inserted", and "the CF
: card is full, replace it with a new CF card or erase unnecessary
: images". How is that ambiguous in any way?
:
: In the specs, it says "Recording Media: Type I or II CF card". Doesn't
: say "built in memory anywhere, does it?
:
: So yes, I've read the manual.
But you seem to have entirely missed my point, which was that notwithstanding
all the verbiage you quoted, the manual notes that it's possible to fire the
shutter without a CF card present but is silent regarding what, if anything,
that might accomplish or when, if ever, one might do it intentionally. The OP
apparently found that confusing, and I can understand why. You, OTOH, saw the
OP's confusion as a reason to portray him as a clueless dolt who's too lazy to
look things up in the manual - even though the manual is the only possible
*source* of his confusion.
BTW, all that rebuttal directed at me is misplaced. I'm not the OP, and I was
never in any doubt regarding the function of, or the necessity for, a CF card.
(I didn't even know you could get away without one in "tethered" mode.) So
forgive me if I don't try to defend a position I didn't take.

My suggestion would be to go ahead and purchase a CF card or two. There are
quite inexpensive now and your photgraphic use of the XTi is going to be
very challenging without flash memory.
