Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

I am buying a digi camera for my 2 non-techy brothers for Xmas. I am
also tech challenged.

With the help of our techy sister, they have determined what they
want. They want either the Kodak C613 or the Polaroid i733.

Here's the environment that this camera will be operated in:

The camera will NEVER be connected to a TV or a computer. They want
close to "point and shoot" capability. They want only prints, of
approx. 4"X6" size. Never larger. They will get these prints by
taking camera or memory card, or both........to a Walgeens.

Not interested in video or audio capabilities. Not interested in
messing around with software or computers or anything like that. Just
4 x 6 prints from Walgreens.

Balancing reliability and 4 x 6 print quality.......(NOT initial
camera purchase price) which of the above cameras would be best for
what they want to do?

Get the Kodak.

When I wanted to buy an inexpensive camera for my non-techie 77 year old
mother, I faced similar challenges, though she did actually want to
connect it to a computer. I got her a Kodak C series because it had a
dock for charging and transferring photos. I didn't want her removing
batteries for charging, the battery doors are too flimsy, and the
low-end cameras use AA batteries which can be inserted wrong (I also
wanted an easy way to transfer photos, without plugging in any cables or
removing memory cards).

Even though your brothers won't be connecting to a computer, it still
may be good to get them something that has a drop on charging dock. The
C613 does have a dock available (two different ones actually--get the
non-printer one).

See
"http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?sku=a1200098&cs"
as this version comes with the charging dock and the KAA2HR Kodak
rechargeable battery. The dock won't charge standard NiMH AA cells.

I don't see the C613 with the plain dock in many places, usually it's
bundled with the printer dock, which is the last thing you want.

Remember, you'll be providing free tech-support for life.

Alas, when my mother was visiting me, and needed some AA batteries, I
asked her what happened to the Kodak KAA2HR NiMH battery that came with
the camera, and apparently she threw it away, not realizing that it was
a Kodak proprietary NiMH battery (two AA cells in a pack together with a
mechanical key that allowed the dock to charge the batteries).

As to the print quality, obviously you're not all that concerned about
it, and either one will be about the same, that is not too great.

From the reviews online, I would choose the Kodak.

I _think_ I understand your question...... I would say that the
memory card would have the images deleted each time they have prints
made. That is.....assuming that the camera itself can delete the
images from the memory card, as long as the card is inserted into the
camera.

Thank you for response......

I would recommend the Kodak, too, but what about the digital files of the
photos, after they are being printed?Shall they have the card formatted,
therefore deleting the files, or shall they have a cd burned?

A CD would cost a bit more, but it would make it very much easier to
distribute copies of the photos to others, and provide a permanent (more
or less) copy, like keeping the negatives. Or, given the cost of SD
cards these days, they could just save the SD cards, and buy new ones
when they fill up. Still much cheaper than film.

That's what I thought too;but the problem with memory cards is that they
aren't normally destined for keeping a permanent record of the data;they
will lose their contents after several years.

Maybe the cd is the only solution....
