Hi,

I'm going to visit Dallas next week and since cameras are much cheaper
in the US than in Sweden where I come from, I'm planning to buy a new
camera there. Could someone who knows the area please tell me about
the best places to buy digitial cameras there?

I'm looking for a store with a knowledgeable staff and a rich variety
of equipment.

Best Regards
//Jan Persson

Arlington Camera on Randol Mill Road in Arlington.
There is a good camera store in Garland, but its name escapes me right now.

Head for a pawn shop. They'll let you test out on the spot before
buying any digicam they are trying to sell after some guy brought in
his barely-used one to borrow on - and then didn't pay back the loan.
Great deals - as they just care that they don't lose money on the
loan.

Pawn shop will have incredible variety of equipment - photo and
everything else. It won't usually have a knowledgeable staff - at
least if "knowledgeable" goes beyond value of items.

I have to ask:
Have you actually gotten such a deal in a pawn shop?
I like to visit pawn shope, because I never know what I'll find.
But I never see the deals you are talking about.
I have *never* seen a late model, desireable camera (certainly never a
reasonably new DSLR) for sale in in a pawnshop.

It is my extremely strong suspiscion that pawn shop owners have a list
of friends who get first shot at the good stuff - based on the fact
that the good stuff goes in, but never makes it to the shelves.
I can't even find any EF lenses for sale.

Anna Nicole Smith's family and
friends converged on the late
model's seaside mansion in the
Bahamas on Monday. It's chaotic.
Hundreds of people are waiting
outside the mansion's security
gate, and that's just the line
for the paternity test.

Yes. Major local pawn shop was going out of business in past
year. I got not only a damn good deal on a barely-used Canon A60 -
which they put batteries in and let me try on the spot and has worked
fine ever since - but also assorted inventory for my online store that
I resold profitably. Only real concern of owners on pawned stuff was
not losing money on the loan that never was paid.

The A60 I bought was like new. Works great to this day. As for
DSLRs, I doubt they have many pawned.
