Long ago, I was a moderately serious 35mm SLR photographer. The last
35mm SLR that I bought was a Canon T70. But for several years,
especially while the kids were small, the convenience of simple
digital cameras seduced me.
Now, I am trying to get into more serious digital photography on a
budget. I have bought a Canon 300D for a very good price from a
friend who was upgrading to a 5D. He has also offered me some spare
lenses. I have already bought the original 18-55mm kit lens and a
28-135mm zoom. On offer are a 75-300mm zoom and a Sigma 100mm macro.
The second two are nice but don't seem to be a priority for the sort
of photos that I want to take.
One type of photograph that I would like to take but I don't seem to
be so well equipped for is people photography in low light without
flash. I miss the 50mm f1.4 that I have on the T70. As well as the
brightness, the low depth of field of the wide aperture is nice for
some shots. The brightest of the lenses above is f3.5.
It is a pity that the 300D will not accept the lens from the T70 even
thought they are both Canon. It would be longer than standard on the
300D but that may actually be good for portraits. It is not auto-
focus but I could live without that for many of the shots that I
want.
I had hoped that fixed focal length lenses would be comparatively
cheap (compared the common zooms) but oddly they don't seem to be. A
new lenses of the type that I want seem to be in the middle £200s. I
have not had much success in finding second hand ones.
If I was buying new, I would have to choose between 30mm and 50mm
which is tricky. The 50mm may be better for portraits but the
narrower angle of view could be a problem indoors.
I was wondering which, if any, lenses intended for non-digital Canons
I may be able to use. Maybe they are cheaper second hand. Obviously
not my T70 but maybe some newer analogue Canons.
What I would like.
30mm to 50mm (if the price was good, I would get a 50mm despite the
concern above)
Ideally f1.4 but maybe f1.8 if the price was good.
Auto-focus not important.
Auto-exposure desirable but if the price was good I could live without
that.
I had a bit of a search in the group but I could not easily find a
question like this one.

No Canon Manual focus lenses will work without some sort of an adapter.
Many people are quite happy with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 which sells for
well under $100.

They won't? My 24mm TS-E most assuredly is manual focus and most
assuredly works without any kind of adapter.
FD lenses, regardless of type of focus, require an adapter, the few
that work at all.
Canon EF lenses, regardless of the type of focus, will work without
any trouble. Non-Canon EF lenses may have problems, depending on the
manufacturer and model and age, that may or may not be correctable by
rechipping the lens, again depending on the model and manufacturer
and age.

Thanks, and thanks to the rest of you as well. So, I can sensibly
look at Canon EF lenses. If I could find one of those 50mm f1.8
lenses for under $100, I would very happy. That would be well within
the budget.
What sort of problems might there be with Non-Canon EF lenses? Is it
something that I could check with a short test?
Another thing I need is a decent tripod, the one I have got is too
flimsy. Fortunately I don't think that I need a Canon digital tripod
and I may dare to buy an old analogue one.

The going price, new, from B&H is $69.95 and shipping. Amazon wants
$76.34 with free shipping.

The problems have mostely been with some Sigma brand lenses I
understand, and the typical symptom is that the camera fails to
operate with an error message showing on the display. I don't have a
list of lenses that have shown it and have never encountered it person
so can't really provide more information, but enough people have
reported it here and in other places to make it clear that it's a real
issue.

That's one item for which if you know what you're looking for you can
find real bargains on ebay. Search google groups for "ebay tripod"
and you should find a discussion that took place here a few months
ago. >> Stay informed about: Budget lenses for Canon 300D user |

I agree too & will recommend the EF 50mm f1.8 lens as the best
lens for the least cost that Canon offers. Optically it is a great
lens, mechanically it is not as hearty as the f1.4 but it also costs
about 1/4 the what the f1.4 lens sells for.
My 2 favorite *fixed* focal length lenses are the above EF
50mm f1.8 & the EF 100mm f2.0 because both are optically very good
lenses & performers in relatively low light situations.
If it helps, I have & use both above mentioned lenses with
both my 300D & newer 30D.

EF 50mm f1.8 lens as the best
get it. it is a great lens.
just watch that it focuses correctly. it has been a problem with the 300.
( my new lens had to be sent to canon for adjustment)

Yes, I found a few on eBay at tempting prices and then I found them
new for only slightly more. By the end of the day, I will have placed
on an order one way or the other.

So, if I can try the lens, I should know immediately if it is going to
work? I could keep my eye open for further bargains. However, with
the 50mm I am about to buy, and the lenses I already have, I don't
know what else I would need anyway. I rarely use the 75-300mmm so I
don't need a longer zoom. I rarely use the 18-55mm so I don't need a
wide angle either. Up to now, the 28-135mm is on the camera most of
the time. The 100mm macro gets a bit of use. I do expect to use the
prime a lot. I like to take photos at social events without flash.
Partly because it is less intrusive but also because they can look
good.
Recently a friend wanted to play with B&W developing. So, I got out
the T70 and put some B&W film in it. It was a nice change to have the
f1.4 lens and this is what moved the acquisition of a prime for the
300D up the agenda. We developed the films (his and mine) in his
kitchen, scanned the negs, and proceeded digitally. Some of the
results were very nice but I don't think that I will continue with
film. A bit of fun, I had not developed for decades, but too much
trouble as an on-going hobby. I will do some more B&W but by post-
processing in software not real film.

Yes, looking for bargains like that is the next step. Later on, I may
look for studio lights.

I have just received this lens from Amazon so I am itching to start
using it.
£73 from Amazon UK. This will sound bad to the Americans out there
but seemed good compared to alternatives. Only after placing the
order, did I notice it in Jacobs in Birmingham for £70. Don't assume
that the web is always cheaper.

Yes, of course. I will fire off a few shots tonight but I won't have
time for anything even half serious until the weekend or the one
after.
A friend and I are thinking of a side by side comparison of our
lenses. We will set up a range of subjects and take them with a
variety of lenses and bodies. The bodies will include a 5D and a
30D. We will just do a subset on my 300D, we don't expect it to
strain the lenses as much as the other two. He has a rather more
expensive Sigma 30mm f/1.4. It will be interesting to see how it
compares. My new one should win on the 5D since the 30mm does not
cover the full frame sensor of the 5D. We are leaving the telephotos
out of this test. 100mm and below this time. This will not be a
highly scientific test since the judgement will just be subjective by
looking at the results. We want to decide which lenses we will use
for which shots.

I can't help with that.

I'll be in Seattle shortly and may try to buy the lens there. Can any

I bought a 50MM 1.8 MkI (metal mount) on eBay a while back. I used it
in low light gyms shooting volleyball. It is wonderful. It was so
sharp that I could never go back to the kit lens. I bought a 28-105
3.5:4.5 on Craigslist to replace the kit lens's reach. So ultimately,
that little 50mm cost me. heh. >> Stay informed about: Budget lenses for Canon 300D user |
