Jackass.
If this person is traveling from the US, then I would have to say
that's not bloody likely, given the currently atrocious exchange rate
for the US dollar.

I have no idea what the status is of public access computers around the
world - it might be safer, though a bit more cumbersome, to rely on CD-R
instead of DVD. >> Stay informed about: Bring Blank DVD-Rs Instead of Buying Hard Drive for 3-week.. |

Hey Crocodile-dundee, have you EVER
traveled to another country in your life?
It's VERY normal for foreigners to be
charged way more than locals. Especially supposedly
rich Americans. People have tried to gouge me
in every other country i have been to.
To be fair, people also try to over-charge
me here in the good ole' USA, but their chances
of success are much slimmer, because I'm usually
familiar with the going rates in an area.
This is NOT to say there are not very gracious
people in Mexico and Thailand....most people
don't try to rip foreigners off.....but there are
certainly a few bad apples out there.
This is also not to say that no Americans
have ever tried to rip off someone new to the country. >> Stay informed about: Bring Blank DVD-Rs Instead of Buying Hard Drive for 3-week.. |

A good point, but ouch on the size of the disks. If he is shooting 8GB
cards and a CD hold about 0.7 GB we are looking at at 11 CD for each
card's worth a images. The burn rate on a CD, in terms of MB/sec, is
also a lot slower then a DVD.
But I would worry about being able to find DVD burners. Here in Hawaii
I know of places you could go to get a CD burned, but I don't think they
are up to DVDs yet.

Oh yeah... You can't trust those greedy Europeans or the thieving Arabs.
They'll rip into the minute you open your mouth and they know you're on
holidays. Like who needs your type on holidays anyway? With an attitude
like yours what makes you think you'll be welcome anyway?
How pretentious can you get?
The truth is you'll probably get cheaper discs and better service than
you're ever likely to get at home.

Whatever works for you. There are no right or wrong answers. I prefer to
bring a pair of small hard drives with me when I travel. Its a hell of a
lot faster to create backup copies of photos on my laptop with the hard
drives then much slower optical media, plus the last thing I want to do
with my valuable vacation time is spend it burning CDs in some store
somewhere when I could be out shooting more photos, but like I said,
whatever works for you ... >> Stay informed about: Bring Blank DVD-Rs Instead of Buying Hard Drive for 3-week.. |

I know what you mean. I bought a laptop a couple of years ago. Main motive
(and main use so far) - to download each day's photos and view them
decently when we're on our regular trips to Yellowstone. A 120gb hard
drive will hold a lot of photos. >> Stay informed about: Bring Blank DVD-Rs Instead of Buying Hard Drive for 3-week.. |

What's this then? Get some of your own lopsided currency exchange and bleed
about it?
Arn't you lot the ones who are supposed have all the money? It must feel odd
to discover other currencies are worth more than your buck. Live with it...
Or stay home.
