A lunar eclipse may not be of much scientific interest
compared to a solar eclipse, but tonight's eclipse will
be the first one since I bought a digital camera. It's
still a couple of hours away, but it doesn't look as if
we're going to have a clear sky tonight. It cleared up
in places awhile ago, but it's completely overcast right
now. Not much I can do except hope..... >> Stay informed about: Anticipating eclipse - hoping for clear sky. |

I'm in India, right smack in the ecliptic zone. It's
only a partial eclipse, of course. Only a few more
minutes to go before the umbral shadow starts to show.
Right now the sky's rapidly alternating between thick
clouds and light haze. >> Stay informed about: Anticipating eclipse - hoping for clear sky. |

Thanks for the wish. Just popped in for a quick check of
the exposure. Light conditions are changing so quickly
- due to atmospheric conditions, not the eclipse - that
it's hard to estimate the correct values. And it's very
hazy at best. Damn. >> Stay informed about: Anticipating eclipse - hoping for clear sky. |

I'm in the valley's of South Wales and whilst out walking my dog
earlier I caught sight of the moon rising between two hills....deep red
with the shadow on top. Totally devasted as I did not have my camera
and in the 15 mins it took me to walk home it had risen above the hills
and had lost it lovely colour/size.
I took a couple of snaps with my Canon S3 but nothing like the
"picture" I had seen that little bit earlier...still at least I caught
a glimpse.

Beautiful and unusual. I intended to shoot at regular
intervals every few minutes, but cloud conditions made
it impossible. It changed literally every second, and
ranged from hazy to completely obscured. At f/4, I had
to use shutter speeds from 1/40 to 1/640. I couldn't
shoot at all for 21 minutes during the greatest depth
of the eclipse.
Here are four samples pasted together, straight out of
the box without any post processing. They were taken
roughly 25 minutes apart. Camera = FZ20.

Well I think your view is just cloud or something as it hasn't actually
started yet. I'm in Bristol and out side my window is a perfect full moon,
bright and white. Acording to
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3020737.stm
it won't be starting until around about 02.10am.
Unfortunately I'll be sound asleep at that time so will miss it altogether.

He's describing a "harvest" moon, where the earth's atmosphere filters the
sunlight striking the moon.

Well no, actually, the page I refered to was an old one from May 2003!
I'm an ass and it looks like I missed it because I didn't read the web page
properly. Doh!
