Lack of detail on the right-hand side - look at the lack of detail in the
large brown tree, and how the buildings on the distant hill have been
converted into an impressionist painting - perhaps by too much noise
reduction.... The water looks painted on as well.

Not a good advert for the camera.

Congratulations on finding detail in the centre. I can't see any
anywhere.

Without knowing John's motive in posting this, and I only see it
second-hand -- he's been way down my scorefile for months, doesn't this
rather give the lie to his claim elsewhere to be able to distinguish
lenses from 10x8 prints?

Apparently he's proud of an ability to distinguish a seagull from a white
rock. Or whatever those white smudges all over the island are.

Thanks for the kind words.

John, I'm not trying to be unkind, just saying how I see the image, as you
posted it for comment.

Indeed, the eye is very forgiving, and doubtless viewed at a "normal"
viewing distance a print would be acceptable.

Cheers,
David

That last refers to the image I posted later -- the first image was a
workflow experiment that got uploaded by mistake.

>John, I'm not trying to be unkind, just saying how I see the image, as you

I actually posted it just for interest (saying nothing about comments),
primarily because I thought both the lighting and cloud formation were
notable. Technical criticism was your idea. Wink But no offense taken.
I was really just observing how all the feedback here (speaking in
general, not about you in particular) has been technical nitpicking, in
part from apparent anti-compact camera bias, in part simply way off the
mark (as in the case of the sign lettering -- when you discover a camera
and lens that can render letters clearly in a 4x2 cell let me know and
I'll snap it up:) Real photo critique (subject, composition, framing,
lighting, etc.) or assessment was nonexistent.

>Indeed, the eye is very forgiving, and doubtless viewed at a "normal"

My own eyes aren't all that forgiving, and the print is actually very
good, even at inspection distance. Smile

That's a lot better. The first one was seriously bad at full res.

The sky color and water color aren't my cup of tea, but it is a nice shot.

They look exactly identical to me.

Never mind the colour, what about complete lack of any real world
detail?

Sadly this is a shot he is using to show off his camera and skills, quite
amazing really, simply sad.

Hi, I scroll through the messages here once in a while and clicked on your
links above, but I can't get the jpg. It shows Image Shack at the top of the
page and there is a big white box which says:
img103.imageshack.us/my.php?image=alcatrazislandix7.jpg at the top with a
small red X in a square which usually means you can't see the picture. I
also copied and pasted your URL into my browser but same result. It makes me
wonder why I can't see the picture.

When I checked out the second link, it had a lot more detail. Now it's
looking ugly and the first one's gone. Maybe I was halucinating.

I just checked, and the image came in fine.
Perhaps there was a temporary server problem.
