Only my most recent photos have been taken with my FZ8. Prior photos
have taken with a variety of other digital cameras, including the
Panasonic FZ5, Olympus D-40Z (still my favorite pocket camera), Olympus
C-2500L (arguably the first serious bridge camera), and several more.
And before that my film photos with taken with Canon T-90, A-1, AE-1,
and several more.

What in your opinion are the best cameras in these categories today? As
advanved as possible but pocketable; bridge. (Currently sold models.) >> Stay informed about: Alcatraz Island with the Panasonic FZ8 |

Best for what?
Pocket camera: Panasonic TZ3
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonictz3/
ZLR (bridge), mostly too-small sensors with too many pixels now, resulting
in poor image quality. If you're spending that much and considering a
"bridge" camera, a low-end DSLR may be better overall value for money.
Some like the Pentax, I prefer the Nikon (e.g. D40 for lowest cost). I
still have my Panasonic FZ5, but I've not tried the FZ8

Arguably the best:
* Fujifilm FinePix F31fd
Also very good:
* Canon PowerShot SD850 IS
* Canon PowerShot SD950 IS
* Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3

Here's my take on it: It's not bad for a little P&S camera. My old
Canon S400 could have done the same, maybe even slightly better. I
keep it in the car with me all the time in case an opportunity pops up
for a photo.
But if I know I'm going somewhere like Alcatraz and am going to have
the opportunity to get some good shots, I'd be very upset with myself
for being in the right place at the right time (as you obviously were
to get a nicely lit shot like that) but not have the right tool to
capture it properly. The camera/lens I'd have had there would at
least have been able to capture that sign on the right well enough to
read. It probably says something like "Warning - No anchoring here"
and some other stuff. But we'll never know from that picture.
And if it could capture the lettering on that sign, the entire picture
would look a lot better.

There's simply not sufficient resolution to capture that sign clearly --
it's only 40x40 overall, and individual letters are about 4x2. To be
able to capture the lettering clearly, I would have had to make a much
higher res pano. (I toyed with the pano idea briefly, but just didn't
have enough time.) Here's a much larger image of the sign:

I was far more concerned with the total loss of detail in everywhere but the
centre of the shot, quite disappointing result really, mind you the
saturation is quite sad though.. >> Stay informed about: Alcatraz Island with the Panasonic FZ8 |
