I'm new to digital cameras and would like to purchase a digital still
picture camera with video capability. I realize that the video would
be limited with the main interest on still pictures. I'd like to use
this for web design - both the video and still aspects. What make/
model and other camera features would you recommend.

Thanks

I don't know how much you want to spend, and for what the photos or videos
will be used, but you will get better quality in photos and videos by buying
two separate cameras, one for photos and one for video. I gave away all my
cameras that take both photos and videos. I currently own 6 digital cameras
and two video cameras.

I would recommend that you look around. There are lots of other factors to
consider: do you require a zoom; would you like to have a manual mode for
more control; would you like time lapse option; would you like to be able
to shoot raw for more flexibility.

I'd suggest you look at the Kodak P series if you're interested in all the
above. If you're not, then it would probably be overkill. I've found good
deals at the kodak online store (especially refurb). You should probably
look at some other makes as well. Check the specs - see what's available
and what appeals to you.

That doesn't narrow the field very much; pretty much any camera these
days, with the exception of the SLRs, will be able to record video as
well as stills.

Some questions to help focus your search:
1. How much money are you thinking of spending?
2. How big of a camera do you want? Something which will fit in a pants
pocket, a jacket pocket or purse, something to wear around your neck?
3. Do you think you'll want a powerful zoom lens?
4. Related, do you think you'll want a wide-angle lens?
5. If you want both 3 and 4, which one is more important to you? Many
point-and-shoot cameras can give you one or the other, but not both. You
could get both with an SLR and a couple of lenses, but your need for
video eliminates that route.
6. While you said that your primary use would be for web sites, do you
think you'll be making any prints from this camera? If so, do you think
you'll ever want to print bigger than 8x10?
