The Canon 40D supposedly gives 80 RAW photos
for each 1 GB. Which would only give me like 30 images per day.

So i guess i will need something like this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/500952-REG/Digital_Foci_P12_120_...to_Safe

Pretty much necessary.....

Damn! This hobby is spinning out of control!

I used something like that on a once-in-a-lifetime trip back to
Hawaii.

Worked well.

Only comment I'd have is that one is still exposed to theft.

My preference would be to have that plus a standalone DVD burner
so I could burn a DVD each night and mail it home.

Or you could be very diligent about deleting all but your best work
every evening.

If you ask a true master of photography how many photos they take in a
day, you are likely to find out that they take days per photograph.

I don't expect you to do the same thing, and I don't, but I sure do
delete a lot. Frankly I would be ashamed for someone to see all the photos
I take on a trip. I only keep the best.

Ok, what are my chances of finding a
computer kiosk in Cairo/Egypt which can burn a DVD or CD-R for me? I
mean, they must have internet access.
So i should be able to find them, right?

I would much rather burn them to DVD than buy another
piece of hardware i'm practically only gonna use once!

I understand what you mean exactly.

I've found, even before the digital age, that
only about 1 in every 20-30 pics is a REAL keeper
of a photograph.

I've definitely gotten used to deleting bad,
blurry pics on my Powershot G3, so maybe i'll just be
diligent about it every night.

And this will allow me to go crazy at the beginning
(when i can afford to take tons of photos), and hopefully
be more selective at the end of the trip (during which, i
hope to improve as a photographer, anyways).

Borrow!

My sister spent a week in Dubrovnk. She borrowed my memory cards (I
had no monster requirements for memory that week), had one full one
burned to DVD in an INet caffey for safety rather than media needs.
She returned the cards to me and won't need them again until Spring,
when she goes to Scotland.

My Rent-A-Safari-Camera-Kit (show up at the trailhead with your
clothing and memory cards, use our cameras, lenses, beaters and
bearers) hasn't attracted much capital, yet. Maybe the other angle
would work: in every airport there are vending machines dispensing
popular sizes and shapes of memory cards, complete with postage-paid
mailers. Stock up at a rental price, shoot your little heart out -
with your very /own/ equipment, mail the full cards to us from
wherever your little heart desires, or when you have returned and
unloaded them onto your very /own/ computer. Cards mailed from over
there are DVDed and the disc is waiting for you when you return.

How can it miss?

In Cairo, excellent. Most large cities anywhere in the world would have
that facility. Now small towns in the rural areas or countries like
Bangladesh, probably not.

8GB is peanuts. It may be sufficient for one day of shooting, but not
for three weeks. I've just returned from a three weeks trip to east Asia
with close to 80GB of photos...

Uploading even 1GB takes forever, not really a good way to add memory.

Putting it on a hard drive seems to be a good way to go when you have
a lot of images that you will be dealing with.

Well I am not sure just what a true master of photography is, but if
you ask a photographer who shoots for National Geographic they will
tell you in the days of film they would shoot between 200 and 300
rolls of film for a two week assignment. In fact I seem to recall
reading on their site one of the way to get good photos it to take
lots of them.

I have done it both ways, taking just a few cards and deleting as I
needed more space and taking a hard drive to transfer to. Over all I
would rather not have to edit down my collection out in the field.

Now that the idea of computer kiosk has come up, we have to
consider one of the many photo hosting services - like Flickr.

Maybe somebody who travels can comment on the practicalities of
uploading a gig or so of photos via a kiosk.

If it's practical, it would seem that no additional equipment is
needed - beyond enough cards to get from
kiosk-session-to-kiosk-session.

Yeah, it really boils down to the laws of averages.

The more tickets you buys, the better your odds of hitting the
lottery.

I might buy another 8GB CF card, and i'm thinking of buying a
bunch
of blank DVD-Rs to record on. I'm sure i'll be able to find internet
kiosks
where ever i go.

First you're going to Europe, now you're asking about Egypt.
Did you do geography at school?
