Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

I'm thinking of buying a second camera and am considering a
used Oly C-725 that I found cheap online. What first got my
attention was that this camera with 8x zoom is being offered
for about a third of the price of my FZ20. I don't mind the
low pixel count, the rather small 1.5" LCD or the somewhat
large size, but would like to have reasonable performance.
I can't find an in-depth review and this is what I gathered
from reviews by a few buyers, mostly inexperienced users -

Short battery life (can't find CIPA rating)
Poor performance in low light
Picture blurry at long zoom (due to lack of IS ?)
Very powerful flash - too powerful by some accounts
Picture quality good to very good
Can't find anything specific about shutter lag.

One conflicting report by an owner who claims to be an
experienced photographer says that picture quality is "awful"
and that battery is "very good", enough for a whole day's
shooting.

There seems to be a lot of negative things said about this
camera. Can anyone please confirm or refute this impression ?
Did Oly produce a lemon with this model ?

Thanks, Paul. Your post from last year was one of the things
I read about the C-725. Actually, I considered emailing you
to ask if you've changed your mind, but decided to post in
the group.

Well, I haven't changed my views. I was more annoyed not long after
purchasing the thing when I could have got a C-765 for a little more.
I've seen some nice pics from that camera but even then it still
apparently has problems.

My first digital camera was a simple Fuji S3500 and I have a
soft spot for the brand. I still think it produced more
accurate skin tones out of the box than my current FZ20. The
only complaint I had regarding picture quality was the loss of
detail in highlight areas.

Unfortunately, constraints caused by my location means that
it's not as simple as just placing an order for anything I
see online that takes my fancy. There _was_ an S5500 offered
for a reasonable price a month ago. I've regretted not buying
it.

Anyway, you and Paul have confirmed the doubts I had about the
Oly C-725 and I've decided not to buy it. Thanks.

I had the C720 (barely any difference to 725) and the shutter lag was
terrible. Forget it for action shots.
If you want something with a big zoom, consider the Fuji S5500, these can be
had second hand quite cheap online. It has a fast shutter response, 10x
optical zoom and has fully manual controls if you want them. It does have
manual focussing but it is a bit fiddly. It does not have IS but for long
zoomed shots you are better to use a tripod anyway.
