Has anyone experienced focusing problems with this lens, such as having it
jerk, stutter or lock up when the shutter is half-depressed? Seems to
occur in AF mode when zooming. Bodies include D70 and D80. Thanks and
regards, ~Ray

Yes, very recently in fact.

It was a rental lens, so a slightly older model but in good condition.
It happened maybe 10x the second day of an event, after about 1000
shots. I found that uncoupling the lens (even partially) was enough to
reset things.

I was concerned that it might be the body (D70s), but it turned out not.
Not too coincidentally, the aperture started sticking wide open, so I
had to shoot the balance of the event at 2.8. It would seem that dust
had gotten into the aperture mechanism and clogged it, so perhaps this
also affected the electrical contacts somehow.

This one's near the top of my 'buy' list, so I'm very interested to hear
of your similar experience. Have you had it checked out yet? What
corrects it for you - turning the camera on/off / removing battery /
uncoupling the lens? Have you used it in a dusty environment recently?

Cheers,
Richard

I would also check the electrical contacts, but also the VR and AF buttons.
Nikon says this lens (and others) can also behave this way if you change
lenses while the camera is on. The only thing to do is to turn the camera off
and then on again with the lens mounted.

This is possibly Nikon's best and sharpest zoom. Trouble reports are fairly
rare.

That seems sort of odd, considering where the switch is located and how
you have to move your bottom finger away from the camera body to knock
it into manual, and you should feel it when it happens. But then again,
I shot half a hockey game wondering why my settings were spazzing around
before realizing I had the camera in bracket mode. Oops.

Point of clarification...

I did clean the contacts on the body and the lens, but the problem
continued. I certainly did attach the lens with the camera on; I rarely
turn it off, but was also swapping a 1.4x teleconverter on/off (though
it'd been removed for about a day before the problem started). I seem
to recall that turning the camera off/on didn't clear the problem, which
is why I tried uncoupling it.

The main problem I ran into was no autofocus movement at half-press.
Around the time of this problem, I did notice the VR jerk at half-press
a few times (though the camera was stable), but no VR "stuttering".

FWIW, I was using AF-C focus mode, spot focus, spot metering, dynamic
AF, VR in Active mode, in bright sunlight, f/5.6, manual exposure, fixed
zoom between 100 and 200mm. No, I didn't have any focus locks pressed
on the body or at the front end of the lens. Smile

Cheers,
Richard

IIRC Ken rockwell reviewed this lense and commented on using it with the
1.4x and having a problem. Try his review site.
