Hi
I have a 580EX flash which I am using with a Canon 20D camera.
My problem is that I cannot get a preflash in the ETTL mode. I did get a
preflash previously, this problem just started to occur.
I set the flash according to the manual (page 11) and set the camera to the
flash icon, but no preflash.
I'm hoping that there is another setting that I am overlooking that someone
can help me with and not a faulty unit. As luck would have it the warranty
expired last month.
Thank you in advance for any help in this.
Best wishes

When you say set the camera to the "flash icon", do you mean white
balance? have you gone through settings?
For what purpose do you want to see the preflash? If you see it, it's
probably not the preflash, but perhaps it was "red eye reduction", which
I don't use.
What problem with exposure are you having that something here needs to
be changed?

Hello again
I would like to thank everyone who replied to my problem.
Actually, I don't think I really had a problem, it was just that I didn't
how the flash worked. I took a picture in ETTL mode and I could see the
flash through the viewfinder. I then put the flash unit in MANUAL mode and
there was no flash visible when I took a picture. I'm sure that is the way
it should operate.
I would like to thank you all again.

You probably saw the preflash previously because you were using second
curtain sync and a slow-ish shutter speed. With normal 1st curtain or
high speed sync you can't usually distinguish the preflash from the main
flash, although you might occasionally see the preflash through the
viewfinder if the light is low enough.
If you press the 2nd button on the right of the 580EX you can cycle
through normal 1st curtain, 2nd curtain, and high speed sync modes to
get your visible preflash back with slow shutter speeds.

Hi Jim,
If you can see the 'flash' through the viewfinder when taking a shot
then the preflash is working - that is what you are seeing. This test
is best done in a darker area.
You cannot see the main flash through the viewfinder (with the viewing
eye) as the mirror is up.
Hope this helps
Cheers,
Allan
