I would like to transfer a large collection of 35mm slides to CD/DVD. Can
anyone recommend a commercial service that they have used to do this that
has provided satisfactory service?
Secondly, what are the major concerns and cautions that I should be
prepared to expect?
Thank you very much for any guidance,

While I have not done that aspect of it, I can give you some
comments based on past discussions of this issue (check
Google for more info there).
1) Do NOT discard the slides after getting them scanned
(you would be amazed how many people will discard
the originals since they now have them as "permanent"
copies).
2) Burn them to good quality media AND a spare hard
drive for safe keeping (drives are cheap these days).
3) Periodically check the media you burned to to make
sure it is not "forgetting" (ignore the man behind the curtain
and the ads that say burned CD's are good for 100 years).
There are a number of utilities out there that will read a
CD/DVD and scan for errors (CDSpeed, DVDInfoPro
just to name a couple). You may want to transfer them
to new media every couple of years just to be safe.
A corrupted digital image is far worse to try and recover
than a faded print/slide.
4) recognize that while jpg's will probably still be supported
in 20 years, the CD's you burned them to will probably have
been replaced by something else and you may not have
access to a reader that can read them (this is unlike the
drawer full of old pictures your parents took 60 years ago).
Hope that helps >> Stay informed about: 35mm Slide Transfer to CD/DVD? |

I am not recommending them ... just pointing out that such services are
available. >> Stay informed about: 35mm Slide Transfer to CD/DVD? |

I transfered my grandfathers slides to miniDV tape about this time last
year. About 4000 of them. I used a carousel slide to video transfer
unit with S-Video out. Not like getting individual high res scans of
each slide, but not nearly as expensive or time consuming either. I
figure it would have cost me about 2000 bucks to get 4000 .jpgs and as
it turned out the AV company that I work for had one of the slide to
video transfer unit sitting around collecting dust and it cost me
bupkis, plus a little bit of time. Converting the tapes to mpeg 2 files
was a bit nerve racking because I had a motherboard on the fritz but
once I got through that nightmare it was pretty easy. My problem is
getting my family to provide the color commentary to make this epoch
slide show archival and documentary

Don't forget to LOOK at the slides before hand. Some may have warped
in their frames, some may have gotten a bad case of mould, and some
may have faded badly and be almost impossible to see without
'resurrection' somehow to counter the loss of colour.
If those things are needed, address them before you have the slides
scanned and converted, as it can be time consuming, and expensive, and
disappointing if your slides are 'awful'... and you convert them.
I've, on occasion, spent over an hour resurrecting ONE slide with a
bad case of mould and fading and warping... so a large collection in
need of such effort will be a challenge to your pocketbook...
Write me offline if you want more info on potential problems... and I
am in Canada, for the record. >> Stay informed about: 35mm Slide Transfer to CD/DVD? |

I was just looking into this and have some suggestions.
If you have alot consider purchasing your own scanner. The good ones
cost in the $1000 range but if you have alot it will pay for itself;
then sell on ebay, or purchase from ebay.
The big named ones on the web all charge $.39 to $.59 per negative.
This is also the price for negatives. I finally went with a local shop
for did it for under $.07 a negative with no corrections. However I
did have to place the same sizes of negative strips together.

I need to do this too. I have looked into it some, and while not full of
information, I have some thoughts on this.
1. Think about doing it yourself. By the time that you pay for all those
slides to be scanned at the best resolution, you could have bought your
own Film Scanner from Nikon, and done it yourself much cheaper.
2. Use the best disk you can find. There are some that will last a very
long time now I have read. Not many, but a few. And you will really pay
a much higher cost for them, and I think that you will need to spl order
them. A I have not seen them in any of the normal places in town.
3. As you finish each slide, make sure you put them in some good
archival pages, and put them in a binder, and store them well. You never
know when you will need to get to them for some reason in the future, or
many those they pass on to. Never get rid of them for anything.

Thanks everyone for your responses!
Regarding saving and taking good care of the originals -- so obvious, and
I hadn't even thought about that yet. You can see that I need help <g>.
But I will do so religiously.
Regarding D.I.Y., I *have* thought about that; but have concluded that I
just simply don't have the time to take on this task. Good suggestions
though, which I would have certainly followed in my younger years when the
days were longer...
Re high-quality media, I would be willing to pay the price if anyone has
recommendations. Unfortunately, I don't know how one would go about
verifying the advertised product longevity. But perhaps they will
guarantee to refund the CD's purchase price if it loses its integrity
within 50 years(??) <g>. That's a tough one -- esp. for me.
I have looked at a number of commercial services since my above original
post. You all are right, they aren't cheap. But I guess I'm still going
to have to bite the bullet. I'm still accepting recommendations if anyone
has had any positive first-hand experiences.
Thanks again,

I have been researching the same type of project myself. I hadn't thought
of selling the scanner afterwards, that is a nice idea. However, I did meet
someone who leased a high end film and slide scanner just to get his on
disk. Said it worked out pretty well but to watch out for worn out
equipment. It took him a second trip to the leasing company to get one that
would feed all the way through. I'm still in the sort and preserve stage.
Hope this can be a viable option.

You get what you pay for. There are cheap services, if all you want
are cheap scans - I've seen it priced as low as $.25 per slide.

I posted a similar question in October.
<http://groups.google.com/group/rec.photo.digital/browse_frm/thread/4ec9dcf389cc6c97/c6fc92755a4987da?#c6fc92755a4987da>
The replies I got were mainly of the "try this place, but I haven't
tried them myself" or for low quality places. But one recommendation
stood out - after looking into it I sent the following to my friend
(who had about 120 slides he needed to scan for his portfolio):
>
>It looks pretty good, with excellent pricing - $0.59 per slide at 2000 dpi,
>$1.04 at 4000 dpi. They don't say if they do 8 bit or 16 bit color, but
>there's a link to email and ask. You can get both .tiff and .jpegs and
>have the files returned on DVD ($18 media cost). For 120 slides it
>would cost $148.80:
>
><http://www.digmypics.com/OE/Pricing.aspx>
In the end my friend decided to do some low quality scans with his
existing setup (slide adapter for his digital camera) for the time
being. He plans to take his slides down to our local high-end camera
store and do the scanning himself on their in-store Imacon 949 scanner
for $55/hr. Details at the bottom of this PDF:
<http://www.kspphoto.com/pdf_files/rental/digital-rentals.pdf>
One concern we had about sending his slides off is trusting UPS/FedEx
etc. to not lose them in transit, and trusting the slide scanning
service to not lose them at their end. Yes, such problems are rare,
but these are the only copies he has and they are the creme of the
crop from over 30 years and thousands of slides. If these slides are
lost in transit they will be gone forever.

That unit is, if I am not mistaken, a PrimeFilm scanner, rebadged as a
Braun. PrimeFilm scanners are also sold in some European countries under
the Reflecta brand name. I do not believe that PrimeFilm markets that
particular model under its own brand name in the US at this time.
I have the PrimeFilm PF3650 Pro3 and am generally satisfied with it. It
does not do batch slide scanning (only one at a time) but it does handle an
entire roll of uncut negatives. I take my 35mm film to my local CVS
Pharmacy where they develop it in about 15 minutes and return the uncut negs
to me. I can then insert them into the scanner, come back in 2 hours, and
all the frames are scanned in a single pass, rather than my having to insert
them 4 or 5 at a time, in negative carriers.
Check amazon.com for excellent prices, if you want to buy. >> Stay informed about: 35mm Slide Transfer to CD/DVD? |

I see Adorama lists the Braun MULTIMAG SlideScan 4000 at $1299.95.
Get together with 10 folks from your local photo club who all have old
slide collections to scan, and that's $130 each.
Can't find 10 people? Buy it, use it yourself, then wait for the next
time this thread comes around and offer your services.
Or buy it, use it, and sell it on eBay.

The Braun 4000 automatically can scan up to 100 slides at a time. Or any
number of slides up to 100 in any order. Or a series of slides, or
batches of slides or just 1 slide. All automatically.

I was too ambiguous--I was referring to the PrimeFilm PF3650 Pro3, the
little brother to the Braun unit. The PrimeFilm 3650 does for negatives
what the Braun does for slides--it enables the operator to scan multiple
items (up to 40 negative frames, in the case of the 3650) without having to
manually insert the films repeatedly. Now if they only made one that would
do negative rolls AND slide trays . . . >> Stay informed about: 35mm Slide Transfer to CD/DVD? |
