Hi all,
I have a question that may have been asked a zillion times in the last
weeks, but I am really desperate and I truly need some human help. The
web or the usenet archives search tools are absolutely hopeless in my
quest, as every time I get loads of extremely wonderful results, each
one stating that "we are the best!", claims that have eternally and
continually been made since the stone age if not since the Big Bang for
nearly every piece of mud that has ever been produced.
My question is nevertheless very simple: I want to buy the best 35 mm
scanner available to date, for up to about $1000 (or, since I live in
the United Kingdom, about 600 pounds, or, since I also live in Europe as
well, about 850 euros). So, which one is that?
Thank you very very much for your kind and precious help.

I think the best you can do is to buy a 2nd hand dedicated film scanner.
E.g. a Coolscan 4000 could be an option or better a 5000. Or a
scanner from some of the other top brands. These scanners do a
much better job than flatbeds.

The Coolscan LS50ED or 4000ED have so far been my best targets, but I
wondered if I could just get some negative comments (positive comments,
I had enough of them, all of them seem to be "the best ever"!)

The Minolta 5400's seem to get very good reviews and have lots of happy
owners. The Nikons *used* to have some issues with their very limited
depth of field, eg if scanning curved slides (eg old kodachromes in
cardboard mounts) it could be difficult to get the outer edges in
focus. I'm out of touch so the newer ones may be fine (and that
problem wasn't a real biggie anyway) but it's something to investigate
if you go secondhand.. >> Stay informed about: Best 35 mm scanner for under $1000? |

Hi.
I had a Nikon Coolscan IV, but was fairly unimpressed and changed over to a
Minolta 5400. In spite of being a long time Nikon Camera user, I much
prefer the Minolta Scanner.
Have a look at comp.periphs.scanners. There was a recent thread
concerning use of curly film in Nikons Film strip loader, which I found had
a tendancy to jam when using Fuji Film.
