Anyone own the Olympus Evolt E-300 or had any experience with it? I'd like
to move up to a digital slr from my point and shoot and I've found the kit,
including the 14-45mm and 40-150mm lenses for what I think is a pretty good
price. I realize it's being replaced by the E-500 so I'm trying to see if
it's worth saving about $200 and going for the E-300 or not. Thanks in
advance for any help.

Try the DPreview OM board for people who have actually used one of these,
rather than Canon users telling you about them! There isn't much difference
performance wise between the 300-500, the 500 has slightly better metering
would be the main advanatage.

I have the 300 and think the $200 in price would be worth it for two
reasons: a much better lcd and a significantly improved metering
system. Although I generally get fine results, there are situations in
which a bright object in the metering area can drive the camera nuts. I
also find that the lcd on the 300 gives me results that are heavy on
the magenta side; there is ample detail but I find it not particularly
accurate (compared to the several other Oly cameras I own) in this
regard. There are some advantages to the 300, one being its rock solid
construction which easily allows me to put some very heavy lenses on it
(I use old PK lenses with an adapter). The kit lens is fine, but if I
had it to do over again I would probably spring for the 14-54 or one
with more wide angle capability. As one who does photos around
construction sites the sensor cleaning feature is just fabulous. Never
a spot or worry. Good luck with whatever you do.

I own the E-300, and I've been pretty happy with it. I looked
briefly at the E-500 at B&H the other day and talked to a salesman, and
while it does have some improvements, it seems to me that they're
relatively minor, and $200, while not a huge amount of money in the
grand scale of things, is a fair percentage of the overall price of
either one. The only thing I really don't like about the kit lenses is
that the focussing is entirely electric, which means it's slow and
imprecise and there are no focus lines on the barrel.
