I see that the 18-35mm EF-S lens is only $100. I'm thinking of
getting an XTi and using my existing EF lenses (35-135 IS and 100-300
IS) with it, but I'd be left without anything wider than 56mm equiv.

For $100, is the 18-35mm a reasonable soultion? Is lens offered at
$100 because Canon has to offer a kit? Or is it really that bad?

Thanks.

-Joel

I have the XTi with the 18-55 . but I cannot pass judgement as it's my
first SLRd. I'm more than pleased with the results.

Given what you already have, I'd say skip it. I have one and never use it.

Is it terrible? No. Is it good? No. Is it useable? Yes.

Get a used one, they go for a pittance on ebay. You could even get a USM one
if you feel like it, for faster and quieter focusing (USM is a bit of
overkill for this particular piece of glass, though, pearls before swine and
all that). The 18-55 is pretty unimpressive as lenses go, but they are far
and away the cheapest way of getting a semi-useful wide angle on a Canon and
stopped down far enough even a soda-bottle bottom will get good sharp
pictures. A 17-40 f/4 L for example is waaay better than the 18-55, but also
waaaaay more expensive.

Looks like used they're going for $70, plus shipping. Hardly seems
worth it if I can get a new one will full warranty for $100. The
question is whether it's good enough to keep on the camera if all I
need is web shots or 4x6's. How will it compare, say, to a high-end
P&S?
